About us

First established in 1936, J Cheesmur & Sons has been based in Lewes, East Sussex since the 1960’s. Following strategic restructuring in 1998 the revitalised J Cheesmur & Sons (Lewes) Ltd has steadily grown and now has a multi-million pound turnover.

We undertake a wide range of contracts, from domestic extensions to multiple dwelling housing developments, with almost 70% of our turnover negotiated or secured on an open book basis. Totally committed to the ethos of partnering, we have demonstrated through experience that it can effectively create the all important trust between client and constructor and ensure that quality projects are achieved to programme and budget.

Operating throughout Sussex and the South East we employ over 40 full-time staff, including management and administrative support from our Cobbe Barns offices. In addition to our own trained and skilled craftsmen we have a valuable resource in our established and experienced supply chain of sub-contractors and suppliers. We are firmly committed to the development and training of our own highly motivated staff and apprentices, who are encouraged to excel in their chosen trade and are fully supported by our experienced and qualified personnel.
