Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, Queens Road, Brighton

Cheesmur recently worked with The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership to complete their “Community Kitchen” on Queens Road in Brighton. The facility will be used to teach cooking to people who may be isolated, suffering from health conditions, are vulnerable or struggling on low incomes. They also hold private cookery classes, the proceeds of which go towards the funding of future courses.

The works included the conversion of an existing office space included installing 7 “cooking stations” to the main area. The new space also included an office area and meeting rooms. Significant electrical and mechanical adaptations were necessary in order to meet the demands of the new layout, including ensuring a high quality level of finish to the open ceiling, which included substantial sheet metal ductwork serving the kitchen areas. The key to the success with this project was the collaborative approach that was employed particularly between Cheesmur, MacConvilles, Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, as well as the Community Base, who let the space out to our client. Another important factor was the effective site management of high numbers of trades within a small site.  Other challenges included the logistics of safe deliveries on one of Brighton’s busiest streets, and ensuring that good segregation of the works was maintained to protect the general public, other users of the building, as well as our own workforce.

Cheesmur ensured that the works were completed in time for the grand opening. We were kindly invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony, which was a resounding success.
