Adur Council, Sompting

Overview:

As part of it's strategy to create more much-need social homes for those in need, Adur District Council identified several garage sites in the area as an opportunity to create much-needed affordable housing for the local community. Cheesmur was awarded two sites within the Sompting area of Adur, originally home to around 20 purpose‑built garages and which had gradually fallen out of use as vehicle sizes increased. Repurposing this underutilised land offered a chance to transform an outdated space into much needed social housing.

Despite the plot's small footprint, the design team successfully developed a scheme to comfortably accommodate four 2-bedroom semi-detached houses and two 1-bedroom bungalows.

Solution:

The design maximised the available space to deliver well-proportioned, modern homes, each featuring private parking and both front and rear gardens for the residents. The bungalows were designed with accessibility in mind, providing suitable accommodation for individuals with mobility needs.

Outcome:

The project was delivered successfully, providing six new social housing properties for Adur District Council. The new homes are now occupied and tenants have settled in well.

Partners:

We would like to thank our collaborative partners for their great work on this scheme: Cityzen, Owen Consulting Engineers, SMS Southern, Bradbury Electrical, and Mason Decorating.
